Several teams gathered in-person and online at HackZurich - Europe's largest hackathon - to take part in Holcim's "Two Billion People Sustainability Challenge". Seeing the prototypes develop in real-time was inspiring and educational as the teams tackled real business challenges including: reusing construction demolition; plastic waste reduction; and lowering emissions waste though our logistics network - all using actual data from our operations.

Our winner is a prototype that addresses the logistics challenges of our cement distribution business in Nigeria. The data-driven solution optimizes logistics by connecting data on historical driving patterns - acceleration and braking data - with external data sources. Optimizing transportation of our products can improve safety and reduce CO2 emissions, accelerating the journey to becoming a #netzero company. Khaled El Dokani, CEO of Holcim Nigeria, joined the evaluation committee and since then has been further investigating this proposed solution in one of the most rapidly growing construction markets in the world. Furthermore, Magali Anderson, our Chief Sustainability Officer, presented the winning solution at #ClimateWeekNYC. We’re excited to see how open innovation will lead to greater sustainability. As Magali says, we need to engage our talent worldwide and make them part of the solution.
